What is Back Pain?

Learn about Back Pain

Back pain refers to discomfort, tension or stiffness in the spine or surrounding muscles. It can affect any part of the back from the neck (cervical spine) to the upper (thoracic) and lower (lumbar) spine. The pain can come on suddenly or develop gradually and may feel dull, sharp or radiate to other areas of the body. Back pain can affect anyone, from office workers and athletes to new parents and manual labourers. Common causes include poor posture, muscular imbalances, repetitive strain, lifting injuries or prolonged sitting. At our Oxford Circus clinic, we assess the underlying cause of your back pain and work with you to reduce symptoms, improve spinal function and prevent it from recurring.

What Are The Common Symptoms Of Back Pain

Back pain symptoms vary depending on the cause and location of the issue. You may feel a dull ache, sharp stabbing pain, tightness, or stiffness. The pain may worsen with movement, prolonged sitting or standing, bending or lifting. In some cases, back pain may radiate into the hips, buttocks, or down the legs, especially if nerves are involved (e.g. sciatica). Muscle spasms, restricted movement, or difficulty straightening your spine are also common. Chronic back pain may impact sleep, mood and day-to-day tasks. At Fit2Function Oxford Circus, we identify the source of your symptoms and design an individualised treatment plan that targets both pain relief and long-term recovery.

What Are The Common Causes Of Back Pain

Back pain can have multiple causes. Common mechanical issues include muscle strains, ligament sprains, poor posture, disc irritation (e.g. bulging or herniated discs) or spinal joint stiffness. Long periods of sitting, lack of movement, or poor lifting technique often contribute. More chronic or recurring cases may be linked to poor core stability, previous injuries, or degenerative changes like osteoarthritis. Stress, fatigue and poor sleep can also heighten pain sensitivity and prolong recovery. At Fit2Function in Oxford Circus, we take a thorough approach to identify what’s causing your back pain, whether it’s postural, structural or lifestyle related and create a targeted plan to address it effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is exercise bad for back pain?

No, when done correctly, exercise is one of the best ways to manage and prevent back pain. We’ll guide you through safe, effective movements that support your recovery.

Try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees, or on your back with a pillow under your knees. A supportive mattress can also help.

Movement, stretching, heat or cold therapy, manual treatment and targeted exercises can all help. Our team will tailor a plan that suits your specific symptoms and lifestyle.

Many clients feel relief within 1-3 sessions, but lasting improvement often takes a few weeks. Recovery time depends on the cause of your back pain and how long you’ve had the pain.

Not always. While posture and injuries are common factors, stress, lack of activity and underlying medical conditions can also contribute. We’ll assess all possible causes on your first appointment at the clinic.
