What is Back Pain?
Back pain refers to discomfort, stiffness or tension affecting the spine or surrounding muscles. It can involve:
- The neck (cervical spine)
- Upper back (thoracic spine)
- Lower back (lumbar spine)
Pain may come on suddenly or build gradually. It can feel dull, sharp, tight or may travel into the hips, buttocks or legs.
Back pain affects people of all ages: office workers, busy professionals, athletes, parents and manual workers alike.
At our Oxford Circus and Covent Garden clinic, we assess the underlying cause of your back pain and work with you to reduce symptoms, improve spinal function and prevent your pain from returning.
Common Symptoms of Back Pain
Back pain symptoms vary depending on the cause and location of the issue.
Symptoms may include:
- Persistent aching or stiffness
- Sharp or catching pain with movement
- Muscle tightness or spasms
- Pain worsened by sitting, standing, bending or lifting
- Pain radiating into the hips or legs (e.g. sciatica)
- Difficulty straightening or moving freely
Ongoing back pain can affect sleep, mood and confidence in movement. Our role is to help you feel safe moving again.
At Fit2Function Oxford Circus and Covent Garden, we identify the source of your symptoms and design an individualised treatment plan that targets both pain relief and long-term recovery.
Common Causes of Back Pain
Back pain rarely has a single cause. It’s often a combination of factors such as:
- Muscle strains or ligament sprains
- Poor posture or prolonged sitting
- Disc irritation or bulges
- Reduced core or hip strength
- Previous injuries
- Joint stiffness or degenerative changes
- Stress, fatigue or poor recovery
At Fit2Function in Oxford Circus and Covent Garden, we take a thorough approach to identify what’s causing your back pain, whether its postural, structural or lifestyle related and create a targeted plan to address it effectively.

I’ve been working with George at Fit to Function on and off over the past year, and I can’t recommend him enough. I was dealing with stubborn bicep tendinitis that just wouldn’t go away, but George completely sorted me out. Super friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful. I also love the new location — clean, professional, and easy to get to. If you’re struggling with any tendon issues, I highly recommend trying shockwave therapy here. It made a huge difference for me!Posted on Yemi OgunsJuly 19, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’ve had some neck pain for a while, same with my right toe and thumb joint from football injuries. George and Conor were very welcoming. George really helped me in understanding the cause and telling me the right treatment before administering it. Completely recommend!Posted on Yves RMJuly 19, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. OMG amazing clinic, solved my issues and can run again. I went to Fit2Function for my ankle and had Anna Jancsurák as my Physiotherapist. She was amazing and so thoughtful and kind and very helpful in my rehabilitation. She explained everything very thoroughly and is very knowledgeable and showed me very helpful excersicesPosted on Oli EstrellaJuly 17, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I am currently being treated by Anna at Fit2Function for recurring knee issues. Anna is a fantastic physiotherapist: knowledgeable, professional, thorough and exceptional at her job. After only 3/6 sessions, and keeping up with physio outside of official appointments (don't skip this step), my legs are stronger and my knees no longer ache throughout my long, active workdays. I cannot recommend Anna enough, and I am safe in the knowledge that, should I ever have any body-related issues, I will be in safe hands with her.

No, when done correctly, exercise is one of the best ways to manage and prevent back pain. We’ll guide you through safe, effective movements that support your recovery.
How to sleep with back pain?
Try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees, or on your back with a pillow under your knees. A supportive mattress can also help.
