What is Sports Massage?
Sports massage is a hands-on treatment designed to reduce muscle tension, improve circulation and support recovery from physical stress or injury.
At Fit2Function Clinics in Oxford Circus and Covent Garden, sports massage is delivered with a clear purpose. Each session is tailored to how your body feels, how you move and what you need to return to doing.
It’s suitable for everyone, not just athletes. Whether you train regularly, sit at a desk all day or are recovering from an injury, sports massage can help you move more freely, feel less restricted and perform at your best.

At our Oxford Circus and Covent Garden clinics, many clients use sports massage as part of a wider recovery or maintenance plan, alongside physiotherapy or exercise rehabilitation.
What Does Sports Massage Involve?
Your session starts with a brief discussion to understand where you’re feeling tight, sore, or restricted and what activities may be contributing.
Treatment may include:
- deep tissue techniques
- myofascial release
- trigger point work
- assisted stretching
You may feel firm pressure in certain areas, but we always work within your comfort level. Our Oxford Circus and Covent Garden massage therapists adapt each session to your needs, whether you want to recover faster from training, reduce pain or simply feel more mobile. You’ll leave feeling looser, lighter and more in tune with your body.

Sports Massage FAQs
What is a sports massage?
A sports massage is a deep, focused treatment targeting specific muscle groups to reduce tension, improve mobility, and support recovery from training or injury.
Can I exercise after a sports massage?
Light activity is fine after a massage, but we generally recommend avoiding intense training for 24 hours to let your body recover and respond to the treatment.
Can you have a sports massage when pregnant?
Yes, but it should be done by a therapist trained in prenatal massage. Always let us know if you’re pregnant so we can adjust your treatment accordingly. If we feel we cannot help you, we will refer you to a more suitable professional in our network.
Does a sports massage hurt?
You may feel some discomfort during deeper techniques, especially in tight or knotted areas, but it should never be unbearable. We always work within your pain tolerance.
Does sports massage improve performance?
Yes. It can enhance flexibility, reduce the risk of injury, and support muscle recovery, all of which contribute to better performance in sport and exercise.
How does sports massage complement other therapies and treatments?
It works well alongside Physiotherapy, sports therapy, sports rehabilitation & our other treatments such as laser therapy. Sports massage is fantastic at preparing muscles for rehab or releasing tension that may be limiting joint movement.
How does sports massage reduce pain and stress?
By improving circulation and targeting trigger points, it helps reduce muscular pain. The relaxing effect of massage also helps lower stress and improve mental clarity.
How long is a sports massage?
At our Oxford Circus and Covent Garden clinic we offer both 30 minute and 60 minute appointments for sports massage. If you have multiple areas that you would like treated, we recommend booking a 60 minute appointment.
How much is a sports massage?
At Fit2Function Oxford Circus and Covent Garden, a 30 minute sports massage is £50. If you would like a 60 minute appointment these are £90. Package options and combined treatments are also available. Both can be booked online or by calling the clinic on 02071172076.
How to prepare for a sports massage?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to remove layers for access to treatment areas, so we recommend shorts and a vest or sports bra if possible.
How often should I get a sports massage?
This depends on your activity level and goals. Active individuals may benefit from weekly or fortnightly sessions, while others might prefer once a month for maintenance. We recommend monthly appointments to begin with & we can adjust your appointment frequency if needed.
